FORMER US President Bill Clinton has promised that 40 health centres in Lindi and Mtwara regions will be supplied with solar power.

Mr Clinton made the promise during talks with President Jakaya Kikwete when the two leaders met in Arusha yesterday. He was later expected to leave for home.

He told President Kikwete that after successful trials in three dispensaries in Masasi district, Mtwara region on the use of solar energy, the next move is to provide the same to 40 other health centres in the two regions.

The implementation of the project is a result of the promise Mr Clinton made to President Kikwete when they met in New York last September during the president’s tour of the US.

An emerging friend of Tanzania, Mr Clinton has formed the Clinton Foundation for HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) to help fight the killer disease as well as treat tuberculosis and malaria, the two major killer diseases in the country.

During their talks, Mr Clinton assured President Kikwete that he intended to assist the president in his efforts to implement development projects that would benefit society.

“On the part of HIV/AIDS, projects that have already been started by the Clinton Foundation (CHAI) will continue to be implemented according to plan”, he said.

As for malaria, he said, results of the pilot projects for the Artemisin-based Combined Therapy, ACT, arthemeterlumefantrine in Maswa district, Shinyanga region and Kongwa district in Dodoma region would be used to extend the programme to 26 other districts that have been identified by the government.
