Police in Dar es Salaam have arrested four suspected armed robbers as they allegedly readied to raid a place in Kigamboni, Temeke district.

Temeke Regional Police Commander (RPC), Emmanuel Kandihabi told reporters yesterday that the men were found with two sub machine guns, 709 bullets and four magazines.

Two of them, Jonathan Nyamweru (42), Ayubu Kuya (38) were newly arrived from Kivande village in Kasulu District, Kigoma Region and were apparently staying at the house of their brother-in-law, Karibu Kayamba (34) where 256 of the bullets were found sealed in a vacuum flask and buried in the compound.

Arrested also was city taxi driver, Emmanuel Ibrahim (26) in whose Toyota Corolla with ante number T669AGT, the men were found huddled when police stopped them at Mbezi Makonde along Bagamoyo Road.

Mr Kandihabi said police acted on a tip off from good citizens and averted what would been a heinous crime. He said although Dar es Salaam was divided into three police regions, cops in the city could operate anywhere as bandits too respected no borders.

The RPC said further that the men told police upon interrogation that they had bought the weapons from a Burundian man they met in Kasulu recently but the police did not quite believe the story. The men had so far refused to name the man, he added.

Kasulu borders neighbouring Burundi and the district hosted thousands of the central African country’s refugees, who were often blamed for regional insecurity. However, peace has returned to the tiny state, which together with Rwanda, formerly another hot zone, have since joined the East African Community (EAC).

Mr Kandihabi said they would still pursue every lead whether true or false in order to get to the source of the big number of loose bullets found on the men and possession by civilians of what is standard military weaponry.
