Prime Minister Edward Lowassa has said the passing away of Paramount Chief Thomas Lenana Marealle II O.B.E. is a big blow that has robbed Tanzania of an industrious leader who gave his all to bring about tangible development for the country and its people.

He said this when delivering a condolence message from President Jakaya Kikwete at the chief`s solemn burial at the Mengeni grounds here yesterday.

Paramount Chief Marealle II of the Chagga always worked hard towards the realisation of development in education, infrastructure, modern agriculture, provision of clean and safe water, better health and other social and economic sectors, the Prime Minister explained.

`We need huge capital for improving our agriculture and provide better education and health services to our people,` Premier Lowassa quoted the chief as saying in a speech he delivered before the UN Trusteeship Council on June 17, 1957.

He added that Paramount Chief Marealle II was committed to ensuring that sound education was available to all people of Chagga origin, especially women in Kilimanjaro Region.

The Prime Minister called on the chief`s children to forge closer links and resist intruders who might make the Marealle family of lose direction.

`The late Chief Marealle II O.B.E. fought against selfishness and self-enrichment. He was always a supportive leader not only to his family but also to the nation and the world at large,` Lowassa stated.

Conducting a short prayer at the burial ground, retired Bishop Erasto Kweka of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania urged mourners to remember that life was short and full of uncertainties.

`Our life is like a fast-moving dream. Human beings have two things to do during their lifetime. The first thing is to design both their short life and their eternal life and the second is to pray for the Almighty Gods mercy,` the retired Bishop pointed out.

Noting that it was God who determines every human beings plans, he said: `God has given human beings precious time for use in cultivating a culture of observing time management and avoid wasting of time during their lifetime.`

In other remarks, Bishop Thomas Laiser described the late Paramount Chief as an enterprising person who led a life characterised by helping his fellow human beings.

The bishop, who is head of the Arusha Diocese of ELCT and was delivering a condolence message on behalf of the Church, underscored the need for people to desist from selfishness.

`Human beings should not entertain selfishness in the form of looting and enriching themselves while leaving their fellow human beings living in abject poverty,` said the bishop.

Meanwhile, in his condolence message, Confederation of Tanzania Industries Chairman and IPP Executive Chairman Reginald Mengi said the late Paramount Chief Marealle II had left a positive lesson to business people.

The chief laid a firm foundation for people to do meaningful business with full confidence, Mengi noted.

`The late Chief Marealle II will be remembered for his commitment to and support for freedom of information through the establishment of a radio station known as Sauti ya Tanganyika and also a newspaper called Komkyaa,` he added.

Paramount Chief Marealle II was laid to rest at his home village of Lyamrakana at Mengeni in Marangu on Saturday evening.

Earlier, hundreds of thousands of mourners from Moshi, Arusha, Manyara and Tanga paid their last respects to the late Chief Marealle II at Mengeni .
