“Find Me in the Club”

Out of all the cities in Tanzania, Dar es Salaam has the busiest night life, with clubs like Billicanas, San Cirro, Garden Bistro, Savanna, Runway, etc; there is something to suit everyone. Now, with the ever growing community, you can find a variety of people hitting the dance floor, from the business man to the young urban college kid looking for a good time.

What is interesting is how each type of club attracts a certain group of people, or the “regulars.” Take a club like Runway with its marble floors, the flashing TV screens, the leather couches, air conditioning, and my absolute favorite, the bathroom with the lounge couch and the stalls with 2 toilets (at least in the girl’s bathroom); very modern, chic, and classy and with the 20,000TSH entrance fees, a bit pricey.  It is never crowded, and the size of the place gives a nice cozy feel to it. The type of crowd that graces this place generally tends to be mostly expats and upper class Tanzanians and the atmosphere is a bit more chilled.

Head into town towards Club Billicanas a.k.a Billz, you will find the parking lot usually full and people loitering outside dressed up to make a statement. Enter in through the glass doors onto a plush red carpet through a pathway that leads up to the counter and into the doorway and your hit by music, color, people, drinks, large flat screen TV’s….if it’s your first time, it can be overwhelming.

The great thing about Billz is the range of people present there, from your average person who makes and average living to a money making C.E.O of a major company. If you really want to get exclusive, there is a V.I.P section (where of course you pay extra) where you can enjoy the scene without the large crowd.

Not too far off, in the 3rd floor of Benjamin Mkapa house, is another club known as Savanna, where everything is themed around the color red, from the red seats to the red carpets, it reminds one of Valentine’s Day: very snazzy, snug and romantic. What is interesting is that the crowd tends to favor Tanzanians, and there is hardly if any expats, at least on the weekends.

The list goes on, as there is a lot to do when the sun goes down and the moon comes out. There is something for everyone, including pubs, local bars, and parties thrown at hotels or on the beaches.

Depending on your taste, your mood, style, you won’t be disappointed!
