Introducing Kijani (RnB duo comprising of twins Caroline and Elizabeth) from Kenya!

Kijani, is an all-girl Pop and RnB duo from Nairobi, Kenya, comprising of twins Caroline and Elizabeth Njuguna. They describe themselves as ‘a group with a sound the world needs to hear’.

The duo currently college students in Nairobi, took an interest in music from a young age. At the end of 2010, they decided to turn what used to be a hobby into a career. They were signed to Cypher Studios, Nairobi and soon embarked on their musical journey.

Kijani’s music is a reflection of the member’s lives, girl power but at the same time enjoyable music with a positive message. The group does not ascribe to a single lead singer and each member’s distinctive style and individuality is apparent in the music.

These artistes challenge themselves to think outside the box and intend to set trends musically in East Africa. Their music is not confined to a specific genre, though on the debut album the influences have come mainly from Pop, Trance and RnB. They are inspired by Freshly Ground, Magic system, Angelique Kidjo, Suzanne Owiyo.

Kijani’s E.P “Hard and Smooth”, comprising five songs was released in mid-October 2010 to positive reviews. In commemoration of World Aids Day 2010, the band released a Swahili HIV/AIDS awareness song “Utamwambia Aje”. In 2011, Kijani released “Wataka Nini”, a vibrant dancehall track, and ‘Breakout’ which were well received in East Africa.

The duo is currently working on their debut album which blends Kenyan and international influences to create a unique and catchy sound. The album is produced by Jimmy ‘the Beatmekah’ Okungu of Cypher Studios, Nairobi and is scheduled for release in 2013.
