HUNDREDS of Dar es Salaam residents, who gathered at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court to hear the judgement of Justine Kasusura and four others accused of stealing 2bn/-, left the court premises disappointed when they were told the accused will be sentenced on Friday.

Crowds of relatives, sympathisers and onlookers gathered at the premises as early as 7am. At 11.00am State Attorney Angaza Mwaipopo rose and read out names of the accused to be sentenced. All the accused – Kasusura (first accused), Wicklift Urassa, Leonard Urassa, Lucy Urassa and Libent Lukundwa – were in the dock.

It was dead silence in the courtroom and the accused, all of them, wore gloomy faces – in sharp contrast with cheerful faces and broad smiles they used to wear during trail.

Attorney Mwaipopo said: “Your Honour, today the case is being concluded. All the accused are present in court awaiting for judgement,” he said and sat down.

But Principal Resident Magistrate Pellagia Khaday told the anxious audience that she was adjourning the case. “The Resident Magistrate in-charge Sivangilwa Mwangesi, who has been hearing this case is sick. I am adjourning this case to Friday when judgement will be delivered.”

The accused were not asked to say anything and court session ended in dead silence.

Kasusura, who was denied bail, was sent back to remand prison while the rest of the accused left with relatives. Security was not as tight yesterday as in the first days of their trial.

The four men and one woman are facing charges of armed robbery. They are accused of stealing, at gunpoint, 2bn/- property of the Citibank on August 15, 2001 as the money was being transported from Julius Nyerere International Airport to the city centre.
