Cabinet ministers and regional commissioners from six regions will today meet in Dodoma to draw up a result-oriented strategy for countering the spread of the life-threatening Rift Valley Fever (RVF).

The gathering of high-profile government officials comes in the wake of increasing RVF infection in Dodoma and a number of upcountry regions, including Manyara, Arusha and Morogoro.

Reliable sources told The Guardian that the Minister of Livestock Development, Anthony Diallo, will meet six regional commissioners in an attempt to map out strategies to fight the outbreak, which has already claimed over 33 lives.

Regions to be represented include Arusha, Iringa, Manyara, Tanga and Singida.

Confirmed reports say the one-day meeting will also involve two other ministers, namely Prof. David Mwakyusa (Health and Social Welfare) and Mizengo Pinda (Local Government and Regional Administration).

I cannot comment anything regarding the RVF. We are having a meeting with the ministers in Dodoma to discuss the RVF outbreak and related issues, said the Director of Livestock Services Department in the Ministry of Livestock Development, Dr. Johnson Mollel.

The first RVF case was first reported in Arusha. It then spread to other regions of Manyara, Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro and Dar es Salaam.

President Jakaya Kikwete recently urged members of the public to take precautionary measures against the threat.
