Kenya’s power vocalist Atemi and Tanzanian songbird: Lady Jaydee release MOYO – a bonafide East African love song. This is Atemi’s first song collaboration with another lady.
She says, “We really hit it off! I respect Lady Jaydee very much; she’s a talented artist and an easy to work with African singer. She really put her all into the song.”
MOYO is a song about different love situations. No matter how tempestuous, passionate or romantic love is in all the scenarios in the song; love is love. Written by Atemi Oyungu, MOYO is Atemi’s debut single from her upcoming third album.
The song has been produced by renown Kenyan producer R-Kay, also producer of Atemi’s USIJALI featuring Delvin Savara of Sauti Sol. Atemi says of the zouk-esque MOYO, “This is a sound that I have been trying out and like very much. But fear not my neo soul fans – there will also still be a touch of soul on the upcoming album!”
Atemi was a founding member of the famed 90s Kenyan girl group: INTU. Her 2004 debut album was Hatimaye(Swahili for Finally). Her second album Manzili (State of Life) was released in 2013. In 2014, Atemi was among artists selected to represent Kenya at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival (June/July) in Washington DC.
Atemi has in the past performed alongside many local and international artists including Grammy Award-winner Anthony Hamilton in 2013. In 2009, she was cast as one of the main characters in Mo Faya – Kenya’s biggest theatre production yet, which was staged off Broadway in Nairobi and New York.
Atemi has headlined at several festivals including the Maputo Flying Carpet Festival in Mozambique, Sawa Sawa Festival in Nairobi, the Diani Music Festival in Mombasa and Sauti za Busara festival in Zanzibar. The singer is a music expert on TV shows like Tusker Project Fame and Airtel Trace Music Stars where she has been a judge, coach and Music Director. She also worked as a music coach for the Safaricom Kenya Live project all though the 2010 and 2011.
