POLICE in Arusha have arrested six suspects linked to Wednesday’s attack on four tourists and their tour guide near Lake Duluti, Arumeru District in Arusha Region.

The arrests followed a major operation mounted by the police force led by the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mr Robert Manumba, who flew here on Wednesday evening.

The Arusha Regional Police Commander, Mr Matei Basilio, said yesterday that the suspects, who include a traditional medicine man, were arrested on Wednesday midnight following a tip-off from good Samaritans.

Mr Basilio named the suspects as traditional medicine man Juma Shaaban Juma (34), Mpanda Japhet (24), Hashim Khamis (19), Dickson Witness (20), Hussein Boniface (18), Atanas Nagwa (26) and Marco Everist (22).

Two suspected bandits on Wednesday ambushed four tourists – three Americans and a Briton. American Jackie Loutz (33) was shot in the stomach while fellow American – Raymond Molica was shot in the right knee. Their guide, Charles Safari (28), was shot in the head.

Briton Jackline Endersby (59) and Americans R.G. Loutz, Jackie’s husband and Molica Vergeldedious escaped unhurt. Safari was still under intensive care at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), while the Americans were airlifted to a Nairobi hospital and were said to be doing well.

President Jakaya Kikwete had also ordered the police force and the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) to team up in hunting suspected Somali gangsters believed to be terrorising tourists and local people in Monduli and Ngorongoro districts.

Serengeti National Park is the world’s greatest animal kingdom whereas the Ngorongoro Crater, a sunken caldera 2,000 feet below, is where Noah’s Arch came to rest. The ecosystem offers an unparalleled safari experience.
