Over 200 female students from three colleges in Dar es Salaam, face eviction from a city apartment for failure to pay 126m/- in rent, after making their payments through an agent alleged to have conned them.

It is alleged that Institute of Finance Management (IFM), Institute of Information Technology (IIT) and the College of Business Education (CBE) students from upcountry were directed to rent the house by an agent identified as Mama Yusra.

Speaking to The Guardian in Dar es Salaam over the weekend, one of the coned students, Ditrick Mwita of IFM said they received an eviction note last Tuesday ordering them to vacate the house by Sunday.

Each student paid 600,000/- for accommodation and we were supposed to stay in the apartment for one year, said Mwita.

The students reported the matter to the Central Police Station last Thursday where they were issued with an RB number CD/RB/4542/007, and asked to report again last Sunday.

Another student, Dangilo Mfundo from Mbeya said she is new in Dar es Salaam and if evicted, she will return to Mbeya as she has no relatives around.

The eviction notice dated April 10, this year, made available to The Guardian, reads in part: “You are required to vacate the premises within three days from the date of this notice.“

It further reads that,“ the Management of Pyramid Estate Limited, the proprietor of the apartments, regrets to terminate the agreement with Mama Yusra because she defaulted in payments agreed between her and the company management.“

Judith Chale from Songea said they have been facing problems in the house and whenever they complained to Mama Yusra, she ignored them.

“Problems are now piling up as the apartments are in total black out. The owner of the house knows students need to study, but has taken no effort to restore lights to the building,“ lamented Chale.

Chale said that the sewerage system of the apartments had blocked creating inconveniences to students and that water in the apartments flows as far as the fifth floor leaving the rest of the floors dry.

Another student, Philipino Tarimo from Kilimanjaro, complained that they called Yusra but she never picked her phone.

“Apart from that, she denies us entrance whenever we go to her house“, said Philipino.

Speaking on telephone from Zanzibar on Sunday, Mama Yusra said she was negotiating with the management of the apartments to stop the eviction.

The house is located along India Street in Dar es Salaam and most of the student tenants are from Mwanza, Tabora, Songea, Lindi, Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, Arusha and Iringa regions.
