THE government of Norway has pledged to fund exploration and development of a new underground water source at Kimbiji near Dar es Salaam in order to end the city’s water supply woes.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA).

The assistance follows discussions between President Jakaya Kikwete and water experts in Norway held here yesterday. President Kikwete is currently on a tour of a number of Nordic and European countries.

In the discussions, the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), the Active Ground Water Management Company (AGWA) and Norway Advisory Company (Norconsult) presented reports on research they had conducted in the coastal regions of Tanzania into the potential of ground water.

It turned out that Kimbiji had a ground water reservoir bigger than any discovered recently in Africa and Australia. “What is needed now is more research to develop this source,” explained the project manager, whose name was not immediately known.

President Kikwete asked the experts to put more effort into the project so that water woes in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar could be consigned to history.

Lack of sufficient clean and safe water is a big problem in Tanzania despite government efforts to supply all citizens with clean, safe and affordable water.

Dar es Salaam alone needs 410,000 cubic metres of water per day against its supply capacity of only 270,000 cubic metres per day, according to the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation (DAWASCO), Chief Executive Officer, Alex Kaaya.
