Flaviana Matata (20) was on Saturday crowned Miss Universe Tanzania 2007 in a colourful event held at the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel in Dar es Salaam.

Flaviana Matata (20) was on Saturday crowned Miss Universe Tanzania 2007 in a colourful event held at the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel in Dar es Salaam.
Flaviana, who becomes the country’s first Miss Universe beauty was awarded 5m/- and will now represent Tanzania in the World Miss Universe Contest, which will be held next month in Mexico City.
At the Gala night Kelly Kampton of Arusha was crowned Miss Earth followed by Sophia Kapama, who was crowned Miss Tourism and Jamila Munisi who was crowned Miss International. They were each awarded 1m/.
Amanda Karurama won Best Smile award followed by Fatma Mungia who was awarded for Best Personality. It was clear from the onset that Matata, who cuts the pose of a real Africa queen, would steal the show. Her magnetic appearance on the stage compelled nothing less than an ear blaring from the revellers who turned up to witness the event.
Smiling from ear to ear and natural Africa beauty skin, Matata who has an ambition to become an engineer could not contain her glee. Thanks for honouring me, she quipped in glaring voice. Matata is a professional model.
The first ever event in the country was organised by Compass Communications whose Director Maria Sarungi, has been involved in organizing some international pageants in the past. She has been instrumental in the grooming and training of contestants who have won accolade in contests of
this stature.
Miss World 1999, Yukta Mookey was among the distinguished invitees at the competition. But she left before the actual event after sharpening the skills of the contestants.
Valerie Kimani a top artist from Kenya and winner of East Africa’s First Project Fame, thrilled the night by entertaining revellers. Dancers from Tanzania House of Talents (THT) also spiced up the night.
